We translate mess into money

Tailored Ops was born from a messy desk, a skeptical sales team, and vendor reports that didn’t add up.

Before this business had a name, it was just me, pointed toward tasks no one else wanted to touch, quietly sorting through a customer incentive program that had long since stopped working the way it should.

At the time, I was newly working for a wholesaler as an accounting clerk, just 4 weeks into my job. They were partnered with a well-known vendor offering incentive reimbursements — money back in the hands of our business when our customers hit certain purchase thresholds from the vendor's product lines. Great in theory. But, in practice, it was a disaster.

No one really owned the process for a very long time. Sales didn’t trust the program, so they didn’t push it. Clients were frustrated because they were promised incentives that never materialized. And worst of all, the owners were footing the bill, paying out reimbursements from their own pockets, because the backend reporting was so broken that we couldn’t even prove what was owed to us.

Everyone avoided it because it was complicated. Scary, even. But I don’t mind complicated.

So I rolled up my sleeves and started learning the language. Literally. I had to get familiar with the vendor’s terminology just to make sense of the system. From there, I dug into the backend, reviewed reports we’d received (and many we hadn’t), and started rebuilding a reconciliation process from scratch.

I created a standardized contract and recording system that matched the vendor’s structure. I began tracking every deal, cross-checking our records with theirs, and establishing consistent internal reporting. That alone made a difference, but then I went further.

I chased down over $250,000 in previously unfiled contracts from the previous person in my role simply stuffing the unfiled contracts into random drawers in her desk, some of which had missed their filing deadline entirely. One batch was nearly a full year overdue. I worked directly with the vendor to make the case, contract by contract, until every dollar was approved and brought back into the business.

But the process wasn’t just technical in nature; it was also an endeavor in emotional intelligence.

The sales team was hesitant. Admin was burnt out. No one wanted to get their hopes up, let alone change how they operated, so I knew demanding things be done a certain way would get me nowhere fast. I offered structure and choices. Not in if the system would be rebuilt, but in how we’d roll it out—what felt manageable, what they needed to feel supported, and how we could make it make sense for the way they already worked.

My approach was embraced and deeply valued, as Sales finally had a program they could stand behind, now having something meaningful in their arsenal to drive meaningful growth in the business (and their commission checks.)

Clients no longer felt burned or confused. They felt like partners.

Admin staff, who once panicked at the mention of incentive claims, now handled the process with clarity and confidence.

And the vendor was so impressed by what we built that they came to us with an offer: Would we be open to piloting their next incentive program, too?

That project wasn’t glamorous, and it certainly didn’t come with a fancy title or any meaningful authority. But it is where I realized something important: money can be found in mess.

Mess, when addressed, becomes well-dressed progress. It's where trust gets rebuilt, burnout gets reversed, and operations stop leaking energy.

That’s the energy behind Tailored Ops.

We’re not here to wave charts around or slap on templated solutions. We’re here to dig in, translate complexity, actively recover what’s been lost, and rebuild within the bones of your business in a way that can be meaningfully measured.

A natural evolution

For the past five years, I’ve been supporting small business owners through my bookkeeping firm, Budding Business Bookkeeping. I found myself, once more, not just balancing books, but becoming the person clients call when they’re trying to figure out what’s really going on behind the numbers.

My background is in financial accounting, but the reality of small business is that you wear a dozen hats whether you meant to or not. Along the way, I’ve picked up more than just ledger logic—I’ve redesigned websites, planned events, created operational checklists, navigated crisis points, and restructured internal workflows for teams that had outgrown their systems.

And even now, when I’m just casually chatting with other business owners at a networking event, I’ll start walking them through a clearer process or a smarter pricing structure and watch them grab a pen and paper. It’s never about showing off—it’s about offering a fresh lens. One they often haven’t had time or headspace to find on their own.

Tailored Ops grew out of that pattern, and is now ready to help you tackle what's next in your own business.
